You've had the rack for twenty minutes and lifted twice

Film your sets. Just don't rent the equipment while you do it.

Nobody actually minds the camera. They mind that the squat rack has been a film set since they arrived, and the resting-between-takes is longer than the lifting.

There's also the other half of it: everyone behind you is in your shot, at the gym, in gym clothes, without having agreed to be.

Why it lands badly

  • Equipment is shared

Setting up a tripod turns a shared rack into your private studio.

  • Retakes aren't sets

Three minutes of angle-checking is three minutes nobody else can lift.

  • Other people are in it

They're being filmed at the gym by a stranger and posted somewhere they'll never see.

  • The tripod is a trip hazard

    Literally. It's in the walkway.

Do this instead

  • Film the set you were doing anyway

One take. Press record, lift, stop.

  • Let people work in

If you're setting up, you're not using it. Say yes.

  • Point it at a wall

Frame so the background is equipment, not strangers.

  • Off-peak for the real shoot

If you need eleven takes, do it at 10pm when the floor's empty.

When it's completely fine

It's empty. You're checking your own form, which is a genuinely good reason to film. It's a quick single take between sets. Nobody's waiting.

Questions people ask

Isn't filming form actually useful?
Very. This page isn't anti-camera. It's anti-tripod-at-6pm.
